Beyond the page

Powerful in deepening the understanding of any literature, Beyond the Page brings stories to life by leading students to explore the text like an actor.  Students have the opportunity to delve deep into exploring what makes each character tick, finding a connection to self, and discovering relevance to the world around them.

(students should dress to move comfortably)

90 Min. with an option for an additional workshop/rehearsals and a showcase performance of their work.

Benefits of Storytelling Workshops for students

  • Build self-confidence: improv is ensemble-based and requires self-control. When students can portray feelings in front of others, it allows them to be who they are - students become more engaged, and their social skills increase.

  • Builds speech articulation: students must let their teammates know how they feel and convey it understandably. TRANSFERABLE SKILL:  Clear and Effective Communication (active listening, using effective expression and receptive communication, purposeful communication, collaborative effectively)

  • Promote creativity: this art form allows students to think freely and be themselves. All ideas are accepted in improv - it’s all about the Yes, And! TRANSFERABLE SKILL: Creative and Practical Problem Solving (observe and elevate situations and identify opportunities for collaboration and innovation.)

  • Builds social skills: improv creates a safe space where all ideas are welcome. You make your teammate look good - sets up a future for open-minded empathic thinkers.

  • Adaptability & flexibility: students are their own writers, directors, and actors - all at once! You’re flying without a net, so students must be willing to ride the wave.

  • Collaboration: improv is building a story brick by brick, and each ensemble member holds a different brick to build the house. TRANSFERABLE SKILL: Responsible and Involved Citizenship (respect diversity and differing points of view, participate and contribute to the enhancement of community.)
